Abashiri · Japan
The drift ice of the Sea of Okhotsk reaches the coast of Hokkaido near Abashiri and Shiretoko Peninsula each winter — the southernmost drift ice in the Northern Hemisphere — and walking on it in late February to March with icebreaker cruise access is a uniquely Japanese experience. The Shiretoko Peninsula, UNESCO World Heritage, extends into the ice floes and hosts Steller's sea eagles, white-tailed eagles, and the rare Blakiston's fish owl in the forest behind the ice.
