Overview
The Picos de Europa are a compact limestone massif on the northern coast of Spain — only 40 km from the Bay of Biscay coast, rising to 2,648 m at Torre Cerredo. The famous Cares Gorge walk (24 km, mostly flat, carved into the canyon wall) is the accessible classic; the high mountain circuits from Fuente Dé cable car deliver scrambling on karst limestone with chamois and griffon vultures. The towns of Potes and Cangas de Onís are charming bases.
