Kangerlussuaq · Greenland
Crossing the Greenland Ice Sheet on skis from Kangerlussuaq on the west coast to Isortoq on the east coast — or the Nansen Route from Ammassalik — is a 3-week polar expedition on an ice sheet 1.8 km thick and 2,500 km long. The surface is flat but wind-blasted sastrugi make progress exhausting; white-outs are disorientating; temperatures drop to -40°C. Each team is fully self-supported with pulk sleds. This is a bucket-list polar traverse.
