Overview

Fiji built its surf legend on one wave: Cloudbreak, the left that detonates over a shallow reef pass a few kilometres out from Tavarua, routinely ranked among the best — and heaviest — waves on earth. Since exclusive access ended in 2010, anyone with a boat can paddle out, which does not mean anyone should: at size it is an expert's wave that ends trips on the coral. The honest brilliance of Fiji is the spread around it: Restaurants' mechanical freight-train left off Tavarua (shallow, perfect, still not for beginners), Namotu Left's longer, friendlier walls, Wilkes and Swimming Pools for rippable rights, and Mamanuca island resorts running daily boat shuttles to whichever pass is working. May to October is prime: Southern Ocean groundswells arrive groomed by south-east trades and the reefs go from playful to serious overnight when a big pulse lands. Water sits around 26°C — boardshorts and a rash top, plus reef booties for the shallow ends of the tide. Base on Namotu or Tavarua (book many months out) or more cheaply at Nadi-side surf camps with boat access. Evenings dissolve into kava sessions where the line-up hierarchy evaporates. Two weeks with daily boats runs about £5,000.
