Overview

The Superbank is a man-made miracle: sand pumped across the Tweed River mouth since 2001 accidentally built a two-kilometre pointbreak linking Snapper Rocks, Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and Kirra. On a cyclone swell you can, in theory, ride a spinning sand-bottom barrel from behind the rock at Snapper all the way into Kirra's legendary inside — the longest hollow wave sequence in the world. In practice, the crowd is the crux. This is the most competitive lineup in Australia, home turf of world champions, and February–April swells bring hundreds to the takeoff zone. Ride the inside runners, surf dawn and dusk, take the scraps with grace, and you will still collect the best sand barrels of your life. Duranbah, over the river training wall, is the pressure valve when the points are maxed or mobbed. Base in Coolangatta — flat whites, surf clubs and airbnbs a barefoot walk from five world-class waves, with Gold Coast Airport ten minutes away. The variable is sand: the bank shifts with every pumping cycle and cyclone, so some seasons Kirra revives and others it fattens. Ten days self-catered with board hire runs about £800.
