Overview

The coast road on Tahiti Iti simply stops at PK0, and beyond the marina the island turns to jungle and reef. Half a mile out, over Havae Pass, the heaviest wave on the planet folds below sea level — a lip thicker than the wave is tall, detonating onto coral a metre down. You watch your first set from a taxi-boat in the channel, close enough to feel the compression in your chest, and understand instantly why they call it 'the end of the road'. This is an EXTREME booking: only experienced reef surfers should paddle out, and even then on the smaller west-swell days. Everyone else surfs the friendlier passes nearby and rides the channel boat when it pumps. The variable that catches people out is swell direction — a rogue west set breaks wide and closes the channel, which is why you hire a local boatman who reads it, not a kayak. Base in a family pension in Teahupo'o village; book boats through the marina. May to October brings the southern-hemisphere swells. Budget around £1,800 for ten days with pension board, boat shuttles and a guide — Tahiti is expensive, and there is no way around that.
