Overview

The Via Alpina Red Trail is the full Alpine crossing: 161 stages and roughly 2,500 km from Trieste on the Adriatic to Monaco on the Mediterranean, staying in the mountains the whole way through all eight Alpine countries — Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France and Monaco. It was stitched together from existing waymarked paths, which means every night ends at a hut, gasthof or village inn, and no stage needs ropes or glacier travel — just legs, weather sense and about three months. The trail's genius is its variety: karst plateaux above Trieste, the limestone giants of the Julian Alps, weeks of Austrian grass ridges and the Allgäu, the granite perimeter of Mont Blanc, and a final descent through the Maritime Alps where the vegetation slides from larch to olive as the sea appears. Most walkers take a full June-to-September season for the whole line, or bite off national sections in two-week blocks. Huts remove the camping weight penalty but the cost adds up — budget around £8,000 for a full traverse at half-board rates, and book Swiss and Mont Blanc-area huts ahead in August. Snowfields linger on the highest cols into early July, so carry light spikes early in the season.
