Overview

The Via Dinarica White Trail threads the spine of the Dinaric Alps for around 1,300 km, from the Slovenian karst down through Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia, finishing on Korab, the 2,764 m summit shared by the last two. It is less a waymarked trail than an idea stitched together from shepherd paths, old supply routes and fresh GPS tracks — which is exactly its appeal. The middle third is the treasure: Bosnia's Sutjeska National Park, where Maglić rises above the Perućica primeval forest; the limestone wilderness of Durmitor and the 1,300 m-deep Tara canyon; then the savage grey teeth of the Prokletije on the Montenegro-Albania-Kosovo borders. Expect route-finding, sparse resupply, and hospitality that will wreck your schedule — mountain huts and village households across the former Yugoslavia treat a passing hiker as an occasion. Walk it in one push over about two months from mid-June, once the high snowfields clear, or section-hike the highlights in a fortnight. Carry navigation you trust and cash in several currencies, and stay on recorded tracks in Bosnia, where some ridgelines still carry marked minefields. Around £4,000 covers a frugal full traverse.
