Overview
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is widely regarded as the best one-day walk in New Zealand — 19.4 km across the volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park, past the emerald and blue Tongariro lakes, over the South Crater, and around the flanks of Mount Ngauruhoe (better known as Mount Doom). The crossing starts at Mangatepopo and ends at Ketetahi; the middle section requires good fitness and appropriate weather. Check volcanic activity alerts before going.
