Overview

At 78° north, ski touring out of Longyearbyen in April hits the high-Arctic sweet spot: the sun is back after four months of polar night, the snowpack is still deep-winter dry, and by late month it never sets at all. Tours head into the glaciated valleys of Nordenskiöld Land or go boat-supported along the fjords, linking peaks like Trollsteinen and long glacier draws where the only other tracks belong to reindeer and ptarmigan. The non-negotiable variable is polar bears: outside Longyearbyen every group must carry a rifle and flare pistol, which in practice means travelling with an armed guide unless you hold the permits yourself. Temperatures of -15 to -25°C with wind demand full expedition layering even under blue sky. Budget around £5,500 for a guided week including snowmobile or boat support and Longyearbyen lodging; flights via Oslo or Tromsø land you two hours from the skin track. No visa is needed — Svalbard sits outside Schengen despite Norwegian administration.
