Oviedo · Spain
The oldest and most rugged of the Camino de Santiago routes, the Primitivo runs 320 km from Oviedo across the Cantabrian Mountains to Santiago de Compostela. It was walked by King Alfonso II in the 9th century and remains the most challenging of the main caminos, with sustained climbs, muddy forest paths, and far fewer pilgrims than the French Way. Rain is near-certain; the solitude is the reward.
