Overview

If you can ride a board off-piste, splitboarding opens the whole winter mountain — and the Val d'Aran is a forgiving, beautiful place to learn. Over four days a guide takes you from your first clumsy transitions on the Beret meadows to a proper summit tour, with Baqueira Beret's lifts as a safety net and the wild Montgarri valley as the graduation exam: a long glide through frozen pine forest to a snowbound sanctuary where snowmobiles deliver lunch. You learn the craft that matters — skinning rhythm, kick turns that do not end in a faceplant, ridge-line transitions in wind, and the avalanche fundamentals (transceiver drills, terrain reading, companion rescue) that underpin every future tour. The Pyrenean snowpack swings between Atlantic dumps and Mediterranean crusts, which makes it an honest classroom. Fly to Toulouse (2.5 hours' drive) and stay in Salardú or Vielha, where Aranese village life carries on regardless of the resort above. January to March is prime. Around £600 for four days including guiding, splitboard and avalanche-kit hire and B&B — remarkable value against Alpine equivalents.
