Overview

Australia has real backcountry skiing, and the Main Range is where it lives: a rolling alpine crest above the tree line where you can link Mount Twynam, Carruthers Peak and the country's rooftop, 2,228m Mount Kosciuszko, on skis. Watsons Crags fall away to the west in genuinely steep chutes, and the Blue Lake cirque holds snow — and occasionally water ice — well into spring. Start from Guthega or Charlotte Pass, crossing the infant Snowy River on snow bridges, and camp or day-tour depending on ambition. The range is featureless when cloud drops, and rime-plastered gales arrive with little warning even in September — carry navigation you trust and treat the forecast as gospel. Snow depth also swings wildly between seasons, so book late once the cover is known. Base in Jindabyne (two hours from Canberra airport), buy your Kosciuszko National Park pass, and go with a guide unless you are competent in whiteout navigation. August to October gives the classic corn window. About £700 for four days guided with lodging — or a fraction of that self-sufficient.
