New Zealand's clubfields are skiing stripped to its bones: no groomers, no queues, no marketing — just rope tows screaming up big alpine basins, and you clinging on with a leather 'nutcracker' clamped over the wire. Craigieburn is the deepest and steepest of them; Broken River hides beyond a beech-forest walk-in; Temple Basin hauls your kit up by goods lift; Mt Olympus guards the far end of a genuinely alarming 4WD road. A week's circuit along the Craigieburn Range delivers terrain that would be roped-off double-blacks anywhere else, plus lodge life you will never forget — bunkrooms, communal dinners, chore rosters and honesty-box beer with the club members who built the tows by hand. Base logistics: fly to Christchurch, hire a 4WD with chains, and allow 90 minutes on SH73 towards Arthur's Pass. Buy a nutcracker harness before your first tow and expect to be humbled by it — everyone is. Snow is all-natural, so keep dates flexible and watch the nor'west storms.
