Overview

The Selvaggio Blu is routinely called Italy's toughest trek, though it is really a climbing journey that follows a coastline. From the limestone prow of Pedra Longa the route traces the Golfo di Orosei north along goat-herders' ledges and juniper-branch stairways built by charcoal burners, linking coves that no road has ever reached. Days involve scrambling to about grade IV, a dozen abseils — the longest around 45m, some free-hanging above turquoise water — and navigation through maquis where the 'path' is a memory shared between guides. The logistics are half the adventure. There is no water on route, so guides arrange boat drops of supplies into the calas ahead of you; you sleep under the stars at Cala Goloritzé's arch or in caves above Cala Sisine, and a support boat is also the only exit if weather turns. Ropework is genuinely required — this is a trip to do guided unless your party can rig and retrieve abseils quickly and confidently. Stage from Baunei or Santa Maria Navarrese on Sardinia's east coast (Cagliari or Olbia airports). April to June and September to October avoid the killing heat. Guided traverses run about £850–1,000 including boat support.
