The Gathering at Minneriya Tank

Overview

By late August the ancient Minneriya reservoir has shrunk to a silver puddle ringed by sweet new grass, and the elephants come. Two hundred, sometimes three hundred, drift out of the dry-zone jungle each afternoon — the largest recurring meeting of Asian elephants anywhere. You sit in an open jeep a respectful distance off and watch matriarchs marshal calves, young bulls spar, and the whole grey assembly graze its way towards sunset with Sigiriya's rock fortress smudged on the horizon. The Gathering follows water, not the calendar: in some years the herds shift to neighbouring Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, so let your driver chase the elephants rather than the park name — permits work the same way. Afternoon (3–6pm) is when the herds are out; expect other jeeps, and insist your driver keeps distance rather than crowding. Base in Habarana or Sigiriya in the cultural triangle, four to five hours from Colombo, and fold the safari into a Sigiriya–Polonnaruwa loop. Three days with jeep hire, park fees and a guesthouse runs to around £300–£400.
