Overview

Nepal means mountains to most people, but drop 3,000 metres to the Terai and a different country appears: sal forest and elephant grass, mist on the Rapti river, and a greater one-horned rhino grazing the far bank like a leftover from deeper time. Chitwan's rhinos — nearly 700 of them — anchor Asia's best-value big-mammal safari, with gharial crocodiles, sloth bears, wild elephants and a rising tiger population in the supporting cast. What sets Chitwan apart is how you move: drifting silently past mugger crocodiles in a dugout canoe, then continuing on foot with two guides who brief you, entirely seriously, on what to do if a rhino charges (find a big tree). Jeep drives cover more ground, but the canoe-and-walk mornings are the memory you keep. Tharu villages fringe the park, and their stick-dance evenings and home kitchens are worth a night of anyone's time. Sauraha is the classic base — a 5–6 hour drive or short flight (to Bharatpur) from Kathmandu — while Meghauli on the quieter western side suits those avoiding crowds. October to March is cool and clear; March's grass-cutting opens up visibility. Four days with guides, park fees, canoe and lodge runs £350–£550.
