Monarch Winter Roosts of Michoacán

Overview

You smell the fir forest before you hear it, and you hear it before you understand it: a low rush, like distant surf, that turns out to be wings. Every winter, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies funnel out of North America into a few hectares of oyamel fir on the Michoacán–México state border, bending whole branches under their massed weight. When the sun breaks through and a roost erupts into orange blizzard, grown adults cry. It is that kind of place. The visit itself is a half-day mountain hike: from the El Rosario gate you climb — on foot or by hired horse — to around 3,200 metres, where mandatory local ejido guides walk you quietly to the colony ropeline. Sierra Chincua, over the ridge, is the calmer second sanctuary. The altitude and near-freezing dawns surprise people who packed for 'Mexico'; bring proper layers and take the climb slowly. Base in the old mining town of Angangueo or day-trip from Mexico City or Morelia (about three hours). The season runs late November to March, peaking January–February, and colonies shift location within the reserve year to year. Go midweek, arrive before the 1pm cloud, and budget around £300–£450 for a guided three-day trip.
