Spirit Bear Search, Great Bear Rainforest

Overview

Somewhere on this mossed-over salmon stream, a black bear that isn't black is fishing. The Kermode or 'spirit' bear — a white-coated genetic morph found almost nowhere else on earth — is the reason you are standing in the rain in Kitasoo/Xai'xais territory, watching your guide read fresh tracks in the estuary mud. When one finally materialises between the cedars, pale against the green dark, it feels less like wildlife watching than folklore made flesh. Trips run from Klemtu, a First Nations village on Swindle Island, out of the community-owned Spirit Bear Lodge — boat days threading fjords where humpbacks lunge-feed, then quiet hours at viewing stands on the salmon rivers. Roughly one bear in ten here carries the white gene, so manage expectations: black bears, coastal wolves and whales are near-certain; the white bear is a gift, most likely during the September–early October salmon run. Getting in is part of it: fly Vancouver to Bella Bella and transfer by boat, or take the inside-passage ferry. It rains — properly — so bring full rubber. Four to five nights all-inclusive from Klemtu runs £3,000–£3,800, and books out a year ahead.
