Overview

The floatplane banks over Naknek Lake and there they are before you've even landed: brown bears spaced along the Brooks River like anglers on a beat. In July, when the sockeye run peaks, a dozen or more jostle at the falls themselves — the biggest males stationed on the lip, snatching leaping salmon out of the air a few metres from the viewing platform. Everything at Brooks Camp is choreographed around the bears: a ranger-led 'bear school' on arrival, boardwalks above the meadows, and platform time limits when the July queues build. September is the connoisseur's month — fewer people, and hulking pre-hibernation bears gorging on carcasses in the lower river. The booking reality catches people out. Brooks Lodge sells out via lottery around 18 months ahead, and the campground's January lottery fills in minutes; most visitors instead day-trip by floatplane from King Salmon (via Anchorage) or Homer. Weather cancels flights regularly, so build in slack. Budget roughly £2,000–£2,600 for a few days including Alaskan bush flights.
