Sarek Traverse: Kvikkjokk to the Rapa Valley

Overview

Sarek is what the Alps were before the huts arrived: around a hundred glaciers, a cluster of 2,000-metre peaks, and not a single marked trail, bridge or cabin in the core of the park. From the road-end hamlet of Kvikkjokk you walk north into a week of self-reliance — fording braided rivers, reading weather off the Padjelanta plateau, camping wherever the reindeer grass is dry. The reward sits at the far end: the summit of Skierfe, a 700m cliff over the Rapa Valley delta, where the river below plaits itself into jade and silver channels that no photograph makes believable. Rapadalen itself is Europe's moose stronghold, willow thickets taller than you are, and the fords are the real gatekeepers: after rain the braided rivers feeding the Rapaätno run thigh-deep and fast, and experienced parties build in a waiting day. Mobile coverage is patchy and exits are long. Access is a sleeper train from Stockholm to Murjek and bus to Kvikkjokk, with the Aktse and Saltoluokta fjällstations bracketing the wild days at either end. Late July to early September, after the melt and before the snows. Roughly £450 in transport, mountain-station nights and food; the solitude comes free.
