Overview

Nicaragua's party trick is wind: Lake Nicaragua sits behind the coast like a giant fan, blowing offshore over the Emerald Coast up to 300 days a year. At Popoyo that means groomed, feathering walls morning to dusk — a rarity anywhere on earth. The main peak is a punchy A-frame over flat reef that handles from playful to double-overhead, while the Outer Reef beyond turns into a genuine big-wave slab for teams with tow ropes and nerve. The Guasacate strip behind the beach is barefoot Nicaragua: surf lodges, smoothie shacks and a dirt road that floods in rain, with Playa Santana and beginner-friendly beach peaks a short walk either way. Boat and 4x4 missions reach Lance's Left and Playgrounds when the angle suits. Fly into Managua and transfer two and a half hours south, or cross overland from Costa Rica. The catch is the midday sun and the reef at low tide — book a lodge with a pool and surf the tide push. Southern swell runs April to October; May–June pairs pumping surf with green hills. Eight days full board at a surf lodge is about £550, one of Central America's best wave-per-pound ratios.
