Puerto Escondido: The Mexican Pipeline

Overview

Playa Zicatela is the heaviest beach break in the Americas — a deep-water trench that lets southern-hemisphere swell hit the sand at full power, throwing top-to-bottom barrels that have broken more boards than any wave in Mexico. From May to September the 'Mexican Pipeline' delivers days when the paddle-out alone is a trial and the reward is the barrel of your life over a metre of water and a lot of moving sand. Know your lane. Zicatela proper is for experienced, fit surfers with step-ups and humility; everyone else surfs La Punta at the south end of the bay, a long, forgiving left point with a friendly crowd, or Carrizalillo's cove for small-wave days. Watching the town's bodyboarders and local chargers from the sand at golden hour is half the spectacle. Puerto has proper infrastructure: fly in via Mexico City or Oaxaca, stay on the Zicatela strip or up in La Punta's sandy lanes, eat tlayudas and fish tacos for pennies. The variable is size — swells jump from head-high to triple-overhead in a day, so bring boards for both and check the bathymetry-driven forecast obsessively. Ten days runs about £750 with a beachfront room.
