Pillar Point, Half Moon Bay, California · United States
Half a mile off Pillar Point, a reef shaped like a launching ramp turns North Pacific winter swell into Mavericks: 15-to-20-metre faces, 10C water, great white territory, and the wave that defined modern big-wave paddle surfing. This trip is an apprenticeship, not a conquest — a winter week built around a big-wave safety and forecasting clinic, breath-hold and rescue training, and, for genuinely qualified chargers, a shot at the shoulder on a moderate day. For everyone else the education is total: watching hellmen paddle over the ledge from a charter boat in the channel, debriefing swell models with local watermen, and understanding the harbour culture that polices this wave. The bluff above Pillar Point Harbor gives a distant view; the boat is the real classroom. Base in Half Moon Bay or El Granada, thirty minutes south of San Francisco. Everything depends on the forecast — the wave breaks properly perhaps a dozen days each winter, so trips are built flexible between November and March. Around £1,500 for the week including clinic, boat time and lodging. The variable that kills plans is fog and northwest wind chop; the variable that kills people is hubris. Train accordingly.
