Overview

El Salvador built its surf reputation on one wave: Punta Roca, a cobblestone right point at La Libertad that throws long, fast, hollow walls rated the best in Central America. On a solid south swell it links sections for 300 metres, from the sketchy boil at the top through the racetrack middle to an inside that finally lets you breathe. The country hosted world championship surfing here for good reason. Base yourself twenty minutes west at El Tunco, the black-sand village with the pig-shaped rock, where El Sunzal's soft outside peak gives you a warm-up wave and the strip's pupuserías refuel you for pennies. La Bocana's rivermouth left sits between them when you want a rapid-fire alternative. Everything runs on dawn: by mid-morning the onshore puff arrives and the heat builds towards 33C. Surf-taxi pickups from El Tunco to Punta Roca are the standard move. The catch is the entry — timing the keyhole between cobblestone sets — and the local hierarchy at the peak, which rewards patience. March to September brings consistent southern swell. About £600 for eight days with guesthouse, surf taxis and board hire; fly into San Salvador, 50 minutes away.
