Surfers Point, Prevelly, Margaret River, Western Australia · Australia
Three hours south of Perth, the Margaret River region throws raw Indian Ocean power at a coastline of granite and limestone. Main Break at Surfers Point is the amphitheatre — a big-shouldered A-frame that holds triple overhead while spectators watch from the car-park rail — with The Box's square mutant barrel breaking mercilessly close on the northern side and North Point's grinding rights up at Gracetown for the truly committed. The contrast is the charm: mornings trading heavy water with wetsuited locals, afternoons among vineyards, karri forest and craft breweries. When the main breaks max out, Redgate, Gnarabup and dozens of lesser corners offer options across 130 kilometres of coast — having a car and local knowledge (or a guide for the first days) transforms the trip. Stay in Margaret River town or Prevelly, five minutes from Surfers Point. The variable is wind and raw swell: this coast rarely goes flat but often goes wild, and autumn (March–June) gives the cleanest marriage of size and grooming. Sharks are part of the local conversation — surf popular breaks and heed beach closures. A week with car hire and guesthouse comes to about £750 before wine purchases.
