Surfing in Tofino means paddling out where temperate rainforest meets the open Pacific: cedar-dark headlands, bald eagles overhead, and beach breaks that work through more tides and winds than seems fair. Cox Bay is the consistent engine room, Chesterman and Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve spread the crowds, and the water — 8 to 14C — makes every wave feel earned. This is Canada's surf town, and it wears the title lightly: float-plane harbour, fish-taco shacks, First Nations culture across Clayoquot Sound, and a community of surfers who treat 5mm rubber as ordinary workwear. September to November brings the sweet spot of lingering warmth and building groundswell. Deep winter is storm-watching season, when lodges sell the spectacle of ten-metre seas from fireside windows. Fly to Vancouver, hop to Tofino or drive-and-ferry via Nanaimo across Vancouver Island's mountain spine. The thing that catches people out is cold management: without a hood, gloves and booties your session is 40 minutes, with them it is three hours. Wolves and black bears genuinely patrol beaches at dawn — read the signs. A week with lodge, hire car and premium rubber rental runs about £850.
