San Onofre State Beach, San Clemente, California · United States
Lower Trestles is the most rippable wave in America: a cobblestone fan at the mouth of San Mateo Creek that bends south swells into flawless, high-performance walls breaking both ways off a single peak. It is where world titles are decided and where average surfers discover their best turns — the wave gives speed for free and asks only that you use it. The ritual is the walk: park at Cristianitos off the I-5, cross under the railway, and follow the trail through San Onofre State Beach's wetland reserve, board under arm, as the marine layer burns off. Uppers, Middles and Church spread the crowd; old-school San Onofre longboard peelers wait a mile south when you want 1950s California pace. Summer south swells (May–September) are the season, and dawn is the only quiet shift — by 8am fifty of Orange County's best are trading the peak, and sitting wide means watching. Base in San Clemente, the quintessential surf town with board factories and taco counters on every block. A week with a rental car, motel room and board hire runs about £900. The variable is the crowd's calibre: sets go to those who sit deepest, so bring your paddling fitness.
