Overview

The Gemsstock cable car climbs to 2,961m above Andermatt and opens one of the Alps' great freeride mountains: shaded north-facing itineraries that hold cold snow for weeks, with the Felsental and Guspis valleys funnelling 1,500 vertical metres back towards the valley floor. Since the resort linked to Sedrun and Disentis the lift-served scale rivals the big names, but the Gemsstock crowd still thins to a handful of locals by mid-morning. The skiing is serious — glacial terrain, convex rolls and real avalanche exposure a rope's width from the marked runs — so this is a trip to do with a guide, learning the mountain's classic lines over five focused days. When storms shut the top station, the Nätschen side and the Sedrun valleys keep you moving. Logistics are the easy part: train from Zurich Airport in under two and a half hours, straight to a village square where the Glacier Express rolls past your café table. Around £950 for five days with shared guiding, a regional pass and B&B lodging — Swiss dinners will test the budget, so self-cater some nights.
