Riksgränsen Midnight Sun Ski Week

Overview

Riksgränsen sits 200km north of the Arctic Circle on the Norwegian border, and it does skiing backwards: the season barely starts before late February, peaks around May Day, and on selected nights in late May the lifts spin close to midnight so you can ski corn snow under the midnight sun. The light alone is worth the journey — low gold across the Lapporten massif while everyone else in Europe is on a beach. The terrain is friendly-freeride: short lifts, endless natural lines off the back towards Norway, and a heli option for the fells beyond. This is entirely natural snow in real Arctic weather, so build in flexibility — a May storm can deliver mid-winter powder or shut the hill for a day. The romance is in the approach: board the night train in Stockholm and step off, eighteen hours later, at a platform a snowball's throw from the lifts. Book the classic Hotell Riksgränsen, ski four days, and budget about £850 for lodging, pass and one heli drop; British Airways and SAS reach Kiruna via Stockholm if the train is full.
