Overview

The Sunnmøre Alps do not ease you in: Slogen's granite pyramid rears 1,564m straight from the black water of the Hjørundfjord, and the touring peaks around it — Saudehornet, Kolåstinden, Skårasalen — all end their descents at the tide line. This is Norway's classic summit-to-sea skiing without the Arctic price tag or the crowds that found the Lofoten islands. Base yourself in Sæbø, a fjord-side village where the ferry doubles as your morning ski lift, or splash out on the wonderfully time-warped Hotel Union Øye, hosting mountaineers since 1891. Days run 1,000–1,400m up and down: skins on at the boathouse, summit views across a hundred white peaks to the sea, then a single unbroken descent to the water. The maritime snowpack is the variable — rain to 800m one day, boot-top powder the next — so a local guide earns their fee choosing aspects. Fly to Ålesund via Oslo, then it is 90 minutes of road and ferry. March to May gives long days and settled corn. About £1,900 for six days with guiding, half board and ferries. Pack for weather, not for cold.
