Overview

Ninety-nine miles of mangrove maze separate Everglades City from Flamingo, and for eight days your world shrinks to a kayak, a chart and the tide table. The Wilderness Waterway threads the Ten Thousand Islands and the rivers behind them — Broad, Shark, the open sweep of Whitewater Bay — past sunning alligators, dolphins herding mullet, and the occasional American crocodile near Flamingo. Nights are the signature: you sleep on chickees, roofed wooden platforms standing alone over the water, cooking dinner while tarpon roll in the dark. The variable is not wildlife but navigation and water — every mangrove island looks like the last one, wind against tide turns the big bays lumpy, and there is no fresh water on the route, so you carry four to six litres per person per day. Go in the dry season, December to March, when mosquitoes relent and the heat is civil. Backcountry permits are limited and released close to departure, so keep dates flexible; outfitters in Everglades City rent boats and shuttle the one-way finish. Self-supported costs a few hundred pounds; guided trips run around £1,100. Study the tides — paddling the Broad against a spring ebb is a lesson nobody repeats.
