Overview

You are rafted up with the group, mid-channel, when the first blow goes off like a struck pipe — then six black fins rise in line, and a family of northern resident orcas passes within a hundred metres of your bow. Johnstone Strait, the tide-ripped channel off northeastern Vancouver Island, holds the most predictable concentration of orcas on Earth each summer, drawn by salmon runs and the rubbing beaches of the Robson Bight reserve — which kayaks skirt respectfully while the whales do as they please. Most trips base at a wilderness camp near Kaikash Creek, paddling out on the tides: humpbacks lunge-feeding in Blackfish Sound, Steller sea lions, porpoises stitching the current lines, black bears turning rocks at low water. Evenings, a hydrophone dropped off the beach pipes the whales' calls into camp. Depart from Telegraph Cove, a boardwalk hamlet an hour from Port McNeill. Guided basecamps of four to six days run about £1,350; book early for late July and August, the salmon peak. The variables are honest ones: fog can pin the group ashore, and orcas sign no contracts — most weeks deliver daily sightings, some don't. The 100-metre wildlife protocol is strict.
