Overview

The Bowron is a geographical fluke that feels designed for canoeists: a 116-kilometre rectangle of lakes, rivers and portages looping through the Cariboo Mountains of British Columbia, finishing a short walk from where you started. No shuttles, no backtracking — just a week of paddling beneath 2,000-metre peaks, with bear caches at numbered campsites and moose feeding in the marshes at either end of the day. The crux is Isaac Lake, 38 kilometres of cold water walled by mountains, where an afternoon wind can raise a genuine sea — experienced parties paddle it early and sit out the blow. The portages (the longest about 2.4 km) go easier than feared because BC Parks allows canoe carts on the graded trails; pack in barrels and roll, don't carry. Start at the registration centre near Bowron Lake, an hour's gravel drive from the gold-rush village of Wells. You must book a circuit reservation with BC Parks — summer slots go quickly when they release — and clear an orientation talk before launching. Self-guided, the trip costs about £550 with canoe and cart hire; guided departures run around £1,600. June brings mosquitoes, September brings gold birches and quiet water.
