Zenobia Wreck Long Weekend, Larnaca

Overview

The Zenobia was a brand-new Swedish ro-ro ferry when her ballast computers failed in June 1980; she sank outside Larnaca with 104 articulated lorries chained to her decks and became Europe's finest wreck dive. She lies on her port side, 172 metres long, with her top at 16 metres and the seabed at 42, so a single wreck genuinely fills a long weekend: lorries hang in their chains like toys, the canteen still holds crockery, and escorted penetrations through the cargo decks reward training with pure theatre. She sits ten minutes from Larnaca harbour, so two boat dives a day is effortless, and 27°C summer water makes a 3mm suit enough. Open Water divers get the upper hull and the atmosphere; the deeper lines and interiors want advanced certification and a guide who knows the routes. May to October is the season. Four days with six boat dives runs about £480 with a harbour-side hotel — the cheapest world-class wreck trip in Europe and an easy add-on to any Cyprus holiday.
