Overview

In the polar night the herring pack into the fjords around Skjervøy, and the orcas follow by the hundred. You slide off a RIB in a drysuit into black 4°C water and hang dead still while a carousel-feeding pod works a bait ball metres away — the clicks arrive in your chest before the whales arrive in view. Humpbacks lunge through the same shoals, close enough that you learn to read the bubble rings and get out of the lane. This is snorkelling, not scuba — regulations keep encounters surface-only — but Arctic seamanship makes it as serious as any dive trip. Days are three hours of pale blue twilight; the aurora fills most of the other twenty-one. Everything depends on weather windows and where the herring have moved, and some days you find neither: the whales owe you nothing. Fly to Tromsø and transfer north to Skjervøy, or sleep aboard a liveaboard that follows the shoals. November to January is the season. Five days runs about £2,300 with drysuit hire; pack proper wool base layers and a healthy respect for the cold.
