Gozo Blue Hole and Malta Wreck Circuit

Overview

Malta's diving is built around freedom: big cylinders, a hire car and shore entries engineered like municipal works. On Gozo the Blue Hole at Dwejra is the centrepiece — you descend inside a collapsed limestone chimney and exit through an archway into open sea at ten metres, then work the boulder field left by the fallen Azure Window, now a dive of its own known as Azure Reef. Across on Malta, the Um El Faraud — a 10,000-tonne tanker scuttled off Wied iż-Żurrieq — and the P29 patrol boat at Ċirkewwa give proper wreck profiles at 20 to 35 metres. By late summer the Mediterranean here reaches 26°C with 30-metre visibility. The variable is wind: sites are chosen each morning by which coast is sheltered, so hire-car flexibility beats any fixed booking, and the ferry between the islands is part of the rhythm. May to October is the season. Six days with ten dives, an apartment and the car lands near £750 before flights — and non-diving companions get Victoria's citadel and swimming coves while you blow bubbles.
