Overview

The Mawson Trail runs 900km from Adelaide's foothills to Blinman, the highest town in South Australia, riding gravel farm roads, station tracks and vineyard lanes named for the Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson. It is Australia's classic inland gravel journey: you start among Barossa and Clare Valley vines, pass Burra's copper-rush ruins, and watch the country dry and redden until the Flinders Ranges lift out of the saltbush like the exposed keel of a continent. The finale is the reason to come: threading Bunyeroo Valley's razorback ridges at golden hour, skirting the ramparts of Wilpena Pound, and climbing through the ochre gorges to Blinman's pub. The variable that catches people out is water and heat planning — north of Burra the towns thin dramatically, tank water needs treating, and a warm spell can push 35°C even in October. Ride April–May or September–October; summer is off the table. Nine days is a strong tourer's pace at around 100km/day. Resupply carefully at Clare, Burra, Melrose and Hawker. Fly to Adelaide; arrange a shuttle back from the Flinders. Budget around £800 with pubs, caravan parks and a celebratory Blinman counter meal.
