Overview

The Munda Biddi Trail — 'path through the forest' in the Noongar language — is the world's longest purpose-built off-road cycling trail: over 1,000km from Mundaring, in the hills behind Perth, to the harbour town of Albany on Western Australia's south coast. It threads jarrah, marri and finally towering karri forest on singletrack and old railway formations, with sleeping shelters spaced a day apart — free, first-come, with rainwater tanks and platforms that make this one of the most tour-friendly wilderness routes anywhere. The moment that makes it comes near Pemberton, when the karri trunks turn cathedral-scale and the trail rolls through green light for hours. Trail towns — Dwellingup, Collie, Nannup, Northcliffe, Denmark — arrive every couple of days for bakeries and resupply. The variable that catches people out is pea gravel: the ball-bearing surface on northern sections punishes skinny tyres and overconfident cornering. Ride 2.2in or wider. Go April–June or September–October; summer brings 40°C heat and total fire bans. Fly to Perth, train to Mundaring, bus back from Albany. Twelve days is brisk; sixteen is pleasant. Budget around £900 mixing free shelters with town pubs.
