Central Otago, Clyde to Middlemarch · New Zealand
New Zealand's original Great Ride follows 152km of the old Otago Central Railway from Clyde to Middlemarch, through the big-sky sheep country of the Maniototo. The gradients are locomotive-gentle, the surface is smooth gravel, and the infrastructure is superb — which is why this is the ride to bring a partner or parent who 'doesn't really cycle' and watch them fall for touring by day two. The drama is quiet and golden: schist tors glowing at dusk, the twin tunnels and viaducts of the Poolburn Gorge, and the lonely Wedderburn goods shed that Grahame Sydney painted into national iconography. Pub accommodation anchors each day — Chatto Creek, Oturehua, Waipiata — and a curling rink detour at Naseby is obligatory in winter. Start in Clyde, about an hour from Queenstown airport; shuttle companies move bags between stops so you ride unladen. Four days at 40km a day is the standard rhythm. The variable that catches people out is weather whiplash — Central Otago swings from 30°C summer days to sub-zero snaps, and the wind across the Maniototo can halve your speed. Book pubs months ahead for February–March. Budget around £500 with bike hire, transfers and pub beds; the trail itself is free.
