Colorado Plateau, Loma to Moab · United States
The Kokopelli Trail links Loma, Colorado to Moab, Utah — 228km of slickrock, sandy wash and canyon-rim doubletrack named for the humpbacked flute player of the desert Southwest. The opening kilometres on Mary's Loop, riding the bench high above the brown coil of the Colorado River, tell you immediately what the next four days will look like: red rock, big air, no shade. Water is the whole game. Reliable sources are the river itself (silty — bring a filter you trust) and almost nothing else, so most riders cache water at the road crossings near Cisco and Dewey Bridge or arrange a support shuttle from Grand Junction or Moab outfitters. The final day climbs unreasonably into the La Sal Mountains before the long, brake-cooking descent to Moab via Sand Flats Road. Access is easy: fly to Grand Junction or drive from Salt Lake City, leave a car in Moab and shuttle back. Camp at fixed BLM sites along the route (book the Westwater-area ones ahead). Budget around £450 self-supported with a shuttle, more if an outfitter hauls your kit. April, May, September and October only — summer is dangerously hot.
