Baja Divide: Tecate to La Paz

Overview

The Baja Divide is a 2,700km dirt-road bikepacking route down the spine of Mexico's Baja peninsula, from the border town of Tecate to La Paz on the Sea of Cortez. It criss-crosses between Pacific surf camps and gulf-side fishing villages via the Valle de los Cirios, where boojum trees and cardón cacti make the landscape look invented, and the old Jesuit mission road through San Ignacio's date-palm oasis. The riding is slow: sand, babyhead rock and endless washboard mean 60km is a solid day, and fat 3in tyres are the difference between riding and pushing. Water dictates everything — 150km stretches between ranchos are normal, and you learn to love warm sodas and machaca burritos at remote comedores. The moment that pays for it all is dropping to Bahía Concepción and camping on white sand metres from bioluminescent water. Ride November to March; summer is lethal. Fly to San Diego, cross at Tecate, and allow four to five weeks to La Paz, resupplying in Guerrero Negro, San Ignacio, Mulegé and Loreto. Spanish basics transform the trip. Budget around £1,600 in camps, casitas and taco stands — Baja is kind to budgets, brutal to drivetrains: bring spare pads, sealant and a chain.
