White Rim Road in Three Days

Overview

The White Rim Road is a 160km loop below the Island in the Sky mesa in Canyonlands National Park, riding a sandstone shelf suspended between the rim 400m above and the Green and Colorado rivers below. You drop in via the Shafer Trail's stacked switchbacks and spend three days circling a landscape that looks borrowed from Mars, camping at designated sites with names like Airport and White Crack — the latter arguably the finest desert campsite in America, staring straight into the Maze. The catch is bureaucracy, then water. Permits for camps release months ahead on recreation.gov and evaporate for spring and autumn weekends, and there is no water anywhere on the route — most groups run a support vehicle carrying 15 litres per person, which also turns the Murphy Hogback and Hardscrabble climbs into unladen fun rather than misery. Base yourself in Moab, 45 minutes from the trailhead; outfitters there rent 4x4s and run guided supported trips. Budget around £500 per person for a self-organised supported loop including permits, vehicle share and food. Ride April–May or September–October; summer on the shelf exceeds 40°C.
