Serranía de la Macarena, Meta, Colombia · Colombia
Trek to Caño Cristales — the River of Five Colors, or the Liquid Rainbow — in the Serranía de la Macarena National Park, where endemic aquatic plants (Macarenia clavigera) turn the river bottom red, pink, yellow, and green simultaneously from July to November. The river is accessible only by small plane from Bogota or Villavicencio and then on foot with a licensed guide; no tourist infrastructure exists outside the village of La Macarena. The surrounding savanna and gallery forest harbour thousands of endemic species. The park reopened to tourism in 2009 after two decades of conflict.
