Lake Bled and Soča Valley, Julian Alps · Slovenia
Slovenia is Europe's outdoor adventure secret — a country the size of Wales with the Julian Alps on its northern border, a turquoise river (the Soča) running through a glacial gorge that looks CGI-rendered, and Lake Bled's island church set against mountains that seem too perfect. Combining a kayak and flat-water paddle on Bled with whitewater kayaking or rafting on the Soča creates a week of varied paddling in extraordinary scenery. The Soča River runs 138km from Triglav National Park to the Adriatic — the upper section near Bovec is Grade III–IV whitewater suitable for experienced paddlers, while the middle section below Most na Soči offers gentler paddling through gorges. The water is a deep, impossible turquoise caused by glacial minerals and remarkable clarity — visibility to 10m in calm sections. Lake Bled on a still morning, paddling out to the island that sits at the lake's centre — the only island in Slovenia, with a church that's been the site of pilgrimage for over 1,000 years — is one of the quietest pleasures in European adventure travel. Rent a wooden pletna boat or bring your own kayak. Combine with hiking on Triglav, Slovenia's only 2,864m peak, and cycling through the Soča Valley for a complete adventure base. Base in Bovec for Soča; Bled for lake access. May–September is the outdoor season.
