Overview

The Outer Hebrides serve Britain's finest sea kayaking: white shell-sand beaches that would pass for the Caribbean until you taste the water, machair meadows loud with corncrakes, and tidal channels threading Harris, the Uists and Barra where seals follow your stern like dogs. The crux is the Sound of Harris — a maze of drying banks and racing tide that demands real passage planning — and the reward is camps on empty strands like Luskentyre's fringe under enormous Atlantic skies, with minke whales and white-tailed eagles as regular company. The Atlantic makes the rules: swell wraps everything, weather windows open and slam shut, and a drysuit is year-round kit in 12°C water, so this is a trip for competent paddlers or a guided group with flexible plans and ferry-hopping alternatives for storm days. Scotland's access laws make wild camping legal and glorious. May to August gives the most light and the kindest sea. A guided week runs about £1,200; self-organised trips cost little beyond the CalMac ferries and food.
