The Salkantay Trek — a 5-day alternative to the Classic Inca Trail that crosses the Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m within direct view of the 6,271 m glacier peak for which the route is named — descends through cloud forest and coffee and cocoa plantations to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. The high pass section involves dramatic contrasts between alpine snowfields and subtropical growth within a single day's walking. The Salkantay Trek is increasingly popular but still less crowded than the main Inca Trail; no permits required.
