Overview

Cycle through the Tatacoa Desert — Colombia's driest region, a labyrinth of ochre and grey badlands between Neiva and the confluence of the Magdalena and Cabrera rivers — through a landscape with more in common with the Atacama than the lush country that surrounds it. The astronomical observatory at the heart of the desert offers exceptional stargazing; the red badlands and grey cactus zone are different enough to warrant separate visits. Cycling the loop tracks between the two colour zones takes a full day; fossils of Miocene megafauna emerge from eroded gullies.
