Combine two of Ethiopia's greatest sights: walk between the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela — 11 medieval Christian churches carved directly from the bedrock in the 12th century, still in active use — then trek north through the Lasta highlands to reach the Simien Mountains. The overland connection is rarely done as a continuous route; local guides navigate between settlements along tracks used by livestock herders. The contrast between the deeply spiritual atmosphere of Lalibela and the wild escarpment wildlife of Simien is as complete a contrast as Ethiopia offers.
