Overview

Trek through the Masoala Peninsula — Madagascar's largest intact rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — on the northeast coast, through lowland and montane forest containing more than 50% of the island's remaining primary rainforest species. The peninsula is accessible only by boat from Maroantsetra; trails are steep, unmarked, and muddy. Red-ruffed lemurs, aye-ayes, fossa, and dozens of endemic chameleon species inhabit the forest. The Bay of Antongil on the eastern coast is a humpback whale nursery from July to September.
